Spina Bifida
-
Spina bifida is a birth defect that affects the spinal cord. One in every 2,758 births in the United States results in a child with Spina Bifida (CDC). Spina Bifida happens early in pregnancy, often before a woman finds out she’s pregnant.
Symptoms can include hydrocephalus, bladder and bowel disfunction, difficulty walking, eating difficulties, and learning disabilities. Each child has different symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
-
Having a child with spina bifida impacts the whole family unit. In a poll of over 100 families who have children with Spina Bifida, Ellavation discovered that family time, leisure, community, and financial resources are all listed as major needs.

In a follow up poll of 100 families affected by Spina Bifida, caretakers reported lack of finances and handicap accessible options being major barriers for families
